Expansion Plans 2009-10

"There is no single village,
town or city in North India
which is 100% child literate"

** Total Literacy Mission **
*** Mullahera Village, Gurgaon ***

भारत निर्माण की दिशा में एक सार्थक कदम

Working on the philosophy of taking small steps to bring about that big change, we have planned to expand our migrant child education program for the year 2009-2010. To cater the migrant population child education problems, we are expanding our ‘School of Excellence’ aiming to achieve 100% child literacy, i.e. to make each and every child between the age group 5-12 years of the nearby villages literate.

* Our main objective for this session is to obtain 100% child literacy rate for Mullahera, Dhundahera and Carterpuri villages of Gurgaon district.

* Students who have got admitted into village govt. school will be montiored by 'Prayatna' team. Only admissions into schools is not our motive, besides that regular monitoring of each and every child's progress and regular talks with their parents is our next move. This step will focus on drop out problem of migrant children. In any case regular studies and cope with their daily problems is our prime concern.

Mullahera being our target area in the past six months, due to easy accessibility and support from the local population including the panchayat.will remain our first focus area. Nearby villages Dhundahera and Carterpuri villages are also in our target area list as they accommodate large number of child laborers and migrant families who are considered deprived sections of society.

Target dates: We will strive to achieve total literacy or 100% child literacy by timeframe of one year from 1st July 2009 to 30th June 2010."

It will be the first attempt of its kind in this part of the country from any non govt. organization. It will have a huge impact on education campaigns or literacy programs running across nation which will certainly ensure a more literate and an EDUCATED INDIA.

Survey is being conducted-
a) To get the exact data of children population in Mullahera village having age above 5 years.
b) School is to going to resume from 4th July’09. Children covered in survey will be accompanied in classes at 'Prayatna' center.
c) A team of college students/professionals/local teachers is formed to conduct survey.

Keys to Success
* A realistic goal and a well planned approach will ensure the achievement of the purpose.
* Our team consists of dedicated and committed individuals who are completely devoted
for the realization of their dream of sending every child to school.
* All our team members are highly educated and working professionals who can apply their learned knowledge for this great noble cause.
* Help, support and guidance from senior members of the society, the likes of Mr. Joydeep Roy (CEO, ITIS) and Ex Army Officer Major General Satbir Singh promises fruitful results for the efforts of the youth.
* Support from the local population including the governing bodies like the panchayat will certainly be a key factor in the accomplishment of the mission.
* Support and Help from Global Organizations like CRY who works for child upliftment.
* Support and Help from other social organizations like NGO ‘Sparsh-ekPrayatna’ who is already serving the society on the child education problem.

A Request for all: We urge you to do participate in this noble cause with high entusium and help us out to achieve the mission. We respect your opinion and always ready to get your invaluable ideas, suggestions and contributions to make program success.

You can involve via:
a) Teach the children in your spare time either on weekends or week days. You can come either morning (from 9 AM to 12 AM) or at evening ( from 4:30 PM to 6 PM)
b) Donate books, copies to children and contribute in office logistics (mats or black board).
c) Contribute in teacher salaries. 'Prayatna' team will teach children in their available time but due to vast number of children in '100% literacy mission' few teachers will be hired.

YFE School of Excellence – ABC for All

Initiative taken by YFE, Gurgaon under the ‘youth - club nachiketa’ campaign.

'Education for all' – mission unaccomplished (even after 60 years of independence)

‘Only through education the whole world can be changed’ – Nelson Mandela

‘Education doesn’t only enlighten the mind but it also librates the spirit’ – Smt. Indira Gandhi

‘The only mission is education - for our country which needs to be focused first’ – Nandan Nilekani, Former CEO, Infosys

"In our time no well educated literate population that is poor, there is no illiterate population that is other than poor"- John Kenneth Gailbraith

Primary education is vital for children development -
It has become a fundamental right; it is thus the responsibility of the state to make it available to every child in the country. The emphasis must be on instilling creativity, innovation and independent thinking which would help in the development of the overall child personality. Psychologists also agree that the primary school environment and education impact children’s personalities to a great extent.

What’s our aim: good, quality education for all.
Primary education is the most prominent and most challenging area, which should be focused today by all policy makers and activists. Same as admitted by Krishna Kumar, director of NCERT and Nandan Nilekani former CEO of Infosys in his forthcoming book on present India challenges named ‘Imagining India’.

To take a deep insight into our primary education situation following links are useful
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/COMMENT_Focus_On_Schools/articleshow/3733672.cms
http://youthforequality.com/education/overview%20of%20indian%20primary%20education.doc
http://youthforequality.com/education/top-without-base.aspx

All these links summarize that “need of hour is to recognize that starting a good primary school is as complex as setting up a new IIT”

What the plan actually –
The number of migrant population is increasingly growing in the metros. Along with this, problems associated with migration are also escalating. The most notable problem is the education of the children of these people.
Their children do not get admissions to govt. schools due to bureaucratic problems arising from their migration such as not having age certificates, not having transfer certificate (TC) or not having previous class mark sheets/report cards. They fail to provide evidence that children were going to school for some period and hence desire to to continue their studies in the relocated territory. We believe these problems though significant can be overcome by working closely with the Govt. departments involved and with focused attention of individuals and organizations. The simplistic idea here is to cast the net wider for bringing education to children. And these children are at the very periphery of the existing boundaries, and hence can be helped to get benefit of Govt. funded education with relatively less efforts.

Cyber city Gurgaon is also facing this problem and an estimated 1.5 lakh migrant children are still not enrolled in any school of the city. Most of them are occupied in different industries of the city and increasing ‘child labour’ problem. To cater their needs YFE Education cell has taken initiative of opening a ‘primary school’ with the support of people ‘Mullahera’ village. YFE volunteers started school on 5th January 2009. ‘Sarpanch’ of ‘Mullahera’ has given panchayt land to YFE for this noble cause and assured his full support.

We are trying to address the shortcomings in of the current system in two ways
-> Based on their 'age' we’ll prepare them for open school exams by giving some elementary education.
-> We'll try and adopt SSA schools (Sarv Sikhsa Abhiyaan) under some NGO’s supervision and after a few months work prepare them for admission in Govt. schools.

Survey to seek target children –
We had conducted a survey (based on guidelines from Aaasra Charitable Trust, New Delhi) to identify children in nearby slums and now they are coming for their regular classes. Besides our own volunteering efforts, retd. school teachers are also providing their services to the school.

Overall, we are concentrating on the following issues in our ‘special school’ named ‘Prayatna’
1) Most of the children are drop outs from govt. schools so our main emphasis will be re-admission of these children in the neighborhood schools.
2) To retain children in school is our prime concern. Attendance should not drop significantly at any point of time. To attain this goal yfe volunteers visiting to their home place or slums fortnightly.
3) Check the progress of each child weekly and emphasize on all possible ways to provide good and quality education

In summary our main objective, is
"good, quality education for someone's omitted by govt., neglected by schools - establish a bridge between them - make them like they can join mainstream within few months - convince schools to adopt them and aware their guardians for their education related rights"

to act as a bridge to extend the reach of existing Govt. funded schooling provisions. We focus our immediate attention on relocated migrant families .We would assist them through preparatory education so as to enable them to be included in the Govt. schools at the earliest where they can benefit from the sustained education efforts of the State –funded education program.

We would also assist training primary teachers who desire to assist our efforts.
ACT India has a model in this regard and we’ll adopt that model.

‘Service to mankind is service to god’ inspired by these words ‘Prayatna’ is been functioning at 'Nai Harijan chaupaal', near Gurudwara, Mullahera village, Gurgaon distt.

we need your co-operation as together we can, together we will

What we seek –

We would like Corporate Firms to part-finance the program under the Corporate Social Responsibility activities prevalent in their organization. We desire of support from individuals in whatever capacity they seem best suits them.

Following are some of our suggestions in this regard:

1) Adopt a child(s) for his/her full education expenses, which is 6 months training course materials (including cloths if needed) only which is nearly 1000 INR per child. We would provide you means and ways to be in touch with child you sponsor and will update you from time to time of the child’s progress.

2) Have a talk with your company CSR team to come forward to help us to sponsor our program.

3) Extend your help with sparing a little time. We strongly recommend that if possible you choose this means. You can come and teach children on daily, weekly or monthly basis depending on your time availability. Additionally to sharing your knowledge you can serve as a role model for the children in their otherwise socially uninspiring conditions.

Do your own. If you desire to start something similar on your own in your neghbourhood, we would be glad to assist you in every possible way.
